Abstract
559,003. Bituminous compositions. SOUTH METROPOLITAN GAS CO., STANIER, H., and FUIDGE, G. H. Sept. 7, 1942, No. 12586. [Class 22] [Also in Group VIII] Material for waterproofing, for impregnating fibrous materials to form roofing felt &c., or for paving or surfacing roads, floors, or roofs &c. is made by dispersing at 320‹ C. or higher, 15 to 25 per cent. of coal having a high content of volatile matter and poor coking properties, into a coal tar which comprises 40 to 55 per cent. of a pitch softening at 80‹ C. (ring and ball) and 60 to 45 per cent. of a coal tar oil mainly of over 300‹ C. b.pt. The coal may have 35 to 42 per cent. volatile matter, a swelling number less than 3, and be ground to pass a 200 mesh/inch sieve ; it may be added to the pitch-oil mixture at 200‹ C. over a period of 2 hours and then agitated and maintained at 330‹ C. for a further 2 hours.
