Abstract
506,577. Bituminous compositions. BAUGES MALCHOW GES. Nov. 10, 1938, Nos. 32726, 32727, 32728, 32729, and 32730. Convention dates, Dec. 11, 1937, Jan. 11, 1938, Feb. 9, 1938, Feb. 17, 1938, and Feb. 17, 1938. [Class 22] Homogeneous mixtures of coal tar and petroleum bitumen are formed by selecting as the bitumen component an oxidized petroleum bitumen or one distilled under a high vacuum. The tar may be a viscous tar, very rich in pitch, having a dropping point above 25‹ C. or a tar having a dropping point below 25‹ C. and a low content, amounting to less than 40 per cent of anthracene oil. With a tar having a dropping point less than 25‹ C., the petroleum bitumen employed has , a softening point, Kraemer Sarnow, of at least 54‹ C. A proportion of petroleum bitumen distilled under normal conditions may also be incorporated. In examples; (1) a road-dressing comprises 50 per cent of coal tar having a dropping point of about 30‹ C. and 50 per cent of an oxidized petroleum bitumen having a softening point of 50-60‹ C. ; the softening point of the mixture is about 26-27‹ C. ; (2) a binder for bituminous concrete comprises 50 per cent of coal tar having a dropping point of 40‹ C., 20 per cent of normally distilled petroleum bitumen having a softening point of 54-58‹ C. and 30 per cent of oxidized petroleum bitumen having a softening point of 75-85‹ C., the softening point of the mixture is about 36‹ C. Other examples are given. The binders may be used in making mastic like masses in conjunction with natural asphalt powder or powdered limestone, sand and other aggregates. In an example, a mastic asphalt comprises 45 per cent of natural asphalt powder of Sicilian origin, 4 per cent of binder comprising equal parts of coal tar and high vacuum bitumen, 40 per cent of chips and 11 per cent of sand. Aqueous emulsions may be made from the tar-petroleum bitumen mixtures.
