Abstract

558,961. Electromagnetic clutches. HEENAN & FROUDE, Ltd., and HAYES, C. T. July 20, 1942, No. 10061. [Class 35] [Also in Groups XIX and XXXIV] A combined eddy-current clutch and brake or dynamometer, in which the excitation of the two elements is independently controlled, comprises a cylindrical member C carried by the driving shaft A, a clutch member E mounted on the driven shaft B, and a brake or dynamometer member F carried on trunnions or secured to pedestals A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>. The clutch member is toothed and has annular exciting coils E<SP>1</SP>. The dynamometer element has annular exciting coils f independently energized; and the driving member is toothed at c' on its outer surface. Cooling passages c are formed in the member C or in a lining thereto ; the cooling fluid is supplied by a flexible duct D to the space formed by the supporting end plates F<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>1</SP> and is guided into the passages by a guide plate c<SP>2</SP>. At the other side, the fluid is removed by a scoop D4. Circumferential cooling passages f<SP>2</SP> are provided on the inner surface of the brake or dynamometer element F and are connected to inlet and outlet ducts. Alternatively the annular exciting coils may be carried on the driving element C, and the adjacent surfaces of the concentric members may be toothed. Specification 533,725 is referred to.
