[Class 130] Tobacco leaves L are fed by belts 4, 5 to a pair of endless belts or chains 19 provided with carding pins 21 arranged in close proximity to each other on an operative flight, the stems of the leaves being engaged and drawn from the leaves by a pair of coacting rolls 75 arranged at one side of the belts 19 with their axes parallel to the path of travel of the belts, the rolls being tapered at their inlet ends 85 and provided with coacting helical grooves 82 to grip the leaf stems. Radial pins 87 on the upper roll 75 guide the leaf stem transversely as the rolls withdraw it from the leaf. A similar pair of smaller rolls 76 may be arranged at the side of the belts 19 beyond the first pair, the rolls being journalled in bearings at each end and the bearings of each upper roll being yieldable. As shown, the belts 19 are each carried by a series of channel-shaped plates 14, Fig. 5, linked to form a chain, the members 17 of which travel on guideways 24 on base members 22, and are driven from a motor 30 through chain &c. gearing. The cylindrical portions of the rolls 75, 76 are formed of discs 79 of rubberized fabric and the rolls are driven through chain &c. gearing from a motor 93. Guide plates 45 at the outlet end strip the leaves from the pins 21 and deliver them to a discharge conveyer 46.
