Abstract

558,273. Dibenzyl derivatives. WELLCOME FOUNDATION, Ltd., and DUFFIN, W. M. March 27, 1942, No. 4075. [Class 2 (iii)] 4 - Hydroxy - αα<SP>1</SP> - diethyldibenzyl is prepared (a) by the reduction, preferably catalytically of 4-hydroxy-α-α<SP>1</SP>-diethylstilbene, or (b) by the hydrolysis of 4-methoxy-αα<SP>1</SP>- diethyldibenzyl. In examples (1) 4-methoxy- α α<SP>1</SP>-diethyldibenzyl is hydrolyzed by alcoholic potassium hydroxide. (2) 4-methoxy-α α<SP>1</SP>- diethyldibenzyl is treated with magnesium methyl iodide and then with hydrochloric acid to form the 4-hydroxy compound. (3) 4- methoxy-α α<SP>1</SP>-diethyldibenzyl is hydrolyzed with an acetic acid solution of hydrobromic acid. (4) 4-Hydroxy-α α<SP>1</SP>-diethyl-stilbene is reduced by hydrogen in the presence of palladium charcoal catalyst.
