557,957. Electric insulation; cooling systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 19, 1942. No. 16366. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1941. [Class 36] Liquid dielectric is continuously circulated during operation of an electrical apparatus immersed in the liquid, means being provided for degasi- fying the liquid. The gas removed may be dried and then returned to the liquid. The transformer 10 ... 12 has ducts 13 for liquid dielectric which is forced from the casing 14 by a pump 30 through pipes 25, 24 and filter 53 and delivered through a spray nozzle 23 to a chamber 22, returning by pipe 27 to the pump 30. Chamber 22 has a float 41 actuating a switch 40 to energize the motor 31 driving the pump 30. The air separated from the liquid by the spray 23 is passed through a drier 45 by a pump 50 driven by a motor 51. Energized through a relay 32 energized through a transformer 38 in the load cable 39, this relay also governing the circuit of motor 31. The expansion tank 20 is filled with liquid to the level 21 and supplied with inert gas, such as nitrogen, from a bottle 54 with valve 56. In one modification the expansion tank is omitted, and in another the gas withdrawn by pump. 50 is discharged into the atmosphere.
