Abstract

557,768. Applying wrappers to cakes or yarn packages. KIRKLEES, Ltd., and TONG, W. Aug. 26, 1942, No. 11986. [Class 120 (iii)] Wrappers are applied to cakes or similar yarn packages by a device comprising two relatively movable jaws which are moved to grip a cake placed on them by a hand-operated lever so that the operator is unable to move the jaws to grip the cake until the latter is in position and the operator's hands free. As shown the jaw A' is fixed to a box plate B and the other jaw A<SP>2</SP> is slidable thereon, a pin a projecting through a slot c in a bracket C secured to the table being connected by a link e<SP>1</SP> to a lever E pivoted in an extension c<SP>1</SP> of the bracket and by a pin e<SP>1</SP> and a pin and slot to the part g<SP>3</SP> of a hand-lever G having a vertical member extending through a slot b in the table. The part g<SP>3</SP> of the hand-lever is extended to form a cam g<SP>4</SP> which cooperates with a pawl f pivoted to the lever E and forced by a spring f when the cam g<SP>4</SP> is out of engagement with the pawl, into engagement with a rack F fixed to the bracket c. The jaws are hollowed out at the top and carry semicircular platforms a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP>, the wrapper H being placed over the closed jaws as shown before the cake D is placed over the jaws onto the platforms a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP>; when the cake is in position the depending parts h of the wrapper are folded up over the top of the cake and the operator can move the handle G in the clockwise direction to open the jaws to grip the cake, the pawl f being forced by its spring f<SP>1</SP> into engagement with the rack F to hold the jaws in position gripping the cake. The parts h<SP>1</SP> of the wrapper are now folded down over the folded parts h and the cake cannot be removed from the device until the operator has moved the handlever G in the anticlockwise direction to force the pawl out of engagement with the rack and then to close the jaws.
