557,603. Planting-machines. WHIDBORNE, J. F., and STEPHENS, F. H. July 30, 1942, No. 10696. [Class 6 (i)) Tractor-drawn machines for planting cabbages and the like comprise a V-shaped trenching drill 13 of narrow angle surmounted by one 14 of wider angle to clear the back surface soil. A knife coulter 15 precedes the drilling tools. Inclined wheels 28 consolidate the soil about the plants set by an operator seated on a platform 32, and who is provided with foot rests 34 and protected by wheel shields 33. The plants are taken from one or more assistants provided with accommodation on the transverse bar 10. Longitudinals 18 support the tools and are sustained by chains 36 and springs 35 of such strength that the tools rise from soil engagement when the operator leaves his seat. Two such sets of tools may be mounted on a single bar 10, spaced to facilitate subsequent inter-row cultivation. Clicking mechanism to indicate the moment for planting consists of gear-wheels 39, 37, the former on the wheel axle 27 and the latter on a bracket 38, being provided with pins arranged in concentric circles. A laterally projecting tongue 42 on a spring blade 43 can be adjusted to click over any of the circles of pins.
