Abstract

557,486. Treating textiles with liquids &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and McFARLANE, R. A. May 19, 1942, No. 6773. [Class 15 (ii)] Bolting cloth, grit gauze and the like is obtained by weaving in a leno weave artificial thread containing one or more continuous filaments, and causing the warp and weft threads to adhere at their crossings and thus prevent them from slipping over one another by treating them with a non-aqueous solution of a resin-like condensation product of a polyhydric alcohol with a polybasic acid. The condensation product may be modified by heating with an oil or urea or urea-formaldehyde condensation products. When weaving in a leno weave, all or only some of the warp threads may be crossed over one another between successive insertions of the weft thread, i.e. a "full leno" or "half leno" fabric may be obtained. Artificial threads of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, nylon, or synthetic resins may be used. The amount of resin applied to the cloth may be 20 per cent. or less of the weight of cloth. It is sufficient to give stability to the weave and stiffness to the cloth but not so great as to diminish the sieving properties. To remove any film which may be formed over the interstices, the cloth may be passed, while wet with the solution of resin, over a rod or series of rods. In an example, a phthalic anhydride-glycerol resin modified by inclusion of castor oil is obtained and mixed with ethylene glycol ethyl ether. A fabric of high tenacity viscose rayon woven in half leno weave is padded with a solution of the resin in benzol and methylated spirits. The fabric is dried on a stenter or similar machine. Specifications 359,897 and 520,579 are referred to.
