May 14, 1942, Nos. 6569/42 and 4857/43 [Class 78 (i)] A machine for picking up cut hay or grass and transferring it to an elevated hopper for delivery to a receptacle comprises an endless belt or other conveyer e mounted on a framework a. The grass &c. is taken off the ground by curved tines n on a horizontal shaft m rotated by chain and sprocket gear p, q from the lower sprockets f of the conveyer. The frame a may be carried by ground wheels b, c, or be mounted on a tractor, and the drive for the conveyer e and picker-up n may be from the wheels b or from a separate motor or from a shaft on the tractor. The picker-up may be fitted with a guard plate. The conveyer e shown consists of side-chains connected by a canvas belt and cross-slats, or by cross-bars g furnished with tines h. In the latter form the tines on the lower traverse of the chains push the hay &c., up a shoot i to the hopper r. The frame a may traverse the ground in either direction, this being pre-determined by the sense in which the shaft m is intended to rotate. The conveyer e may be of any type, such as a screw, and more than one conveyer may be provided, arranged side by side.
