Abstract
560,867. Potato harvesters. JOHNSON, T. S., and JOHNSON (ENGINEERING), Ltd. Dec. 21, 1942; No. 11232. [Class 6 (iii)] [Also in Group XXX] In a potato harvester in which potatoes are lifted by a share 20 on to an inclined conveyer a which delivers them on to horizontal conveyer c through which they pass to a transverse elevating conveyer d, soil passing through the conveyers a, d and the tops and large lumps of earth being discharged by the conveyer c at the back of the machine, the return run of the conveyer d passes beneath the return run of the conveyer c. The conveyer a is connected by rods 13 to cranks 14 on a cross-shaft 15 operable through a crank 16 and a connecting rod 17 for pivoting about the driving shaft 11 to adjust the depth of cut of the share 20. The'shaft 11 is driven by a chain 12 from a shaft 4 connected by a chain drive with the axle 8 or through gearing in a box 5 and an inclined shaft 6 with a power unit on a towing tractor. A rotary agitator having a cylindrical surface formed by spaced bars or slats may be arranged between the conveyers a, c and driven through gearing from the shaft 11. Guide plates 25a are disposed above the conveyer c, which is also driven through gearing from the shaft 11 and may be jogged as-by means of an eccentric mechanism. The conveyer d is driven through a chain 31 and bevel gearing from the shaft 11 and its upper end may be raised or lowered by connecting the stay rods 27 to crank arms on a shaft connected through toothed or worm gearing with an operating handle. The conveyer d may be provided with a hopper 34 or shoot discharging into a cart driven by the side of, or attached to, the machine or the shoot may discharge into a trailer. The hopper 34 has a pivoted part 35 controlled by springs 37 for discharging the potatoes in bulk. The bars 22, 28 of the conveyers c, d may be covered with rubber &c., the bars at intervals being raised above the level of the other bars. A seat 44 is provided adjacent the conveyer d. The wheels 2 may be adjustable to vary the width of the track.
