Abstract

557,049. Utilizing wave and tide energy. ROSENSTENGEL, B. L. Aug. 1, 1942, No. 10817. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1941. [Class 69 (i)] Power is produced in consequence of the pitching and/or rolling movement of a vessel such as a ship at sea, by providing the vessel with a pair of closed chambers C, D which are connected at their lower ends by a pipe or pipes B and which contain guided and cushioned floats G, H to reciprocate axial rods J, K. The latter may be arranged to produce rotary motion, or they may reciprocate plungers X, X<SP>1</SP> in cylinders Y, Y<SP>1</SP> to pump water or to compress air, and thereby drive a motor or turbine to generate electricity for storage batteries. The floats may be counterbalanced, and the power produced may be employed to steady the movements of the vessel. The floats may be guided by rollers G, H<SP>1</SP> or by radial floats engaging longitudinal channels in the chambers C, D. The floats rest on discs J<SP>1</SP>, K<SP>1</SP> on the rods J, K which pass freely through passages G<SP>2</SP>, H<SP>2</SP> in the floats and have hemispherical rockers N which cooperate with corresponding cavities in the floats. Small independent floats O, O<SP>1</SP> slide on the rods J, K, compress springs P, P', and overcome springs T, T<SP>1</SP> to close disc valves Q, Q<SP>1</SP> and entrap air in chamber R, R. Upper and lower buffer springs U are provided in the chambers, and spring controlled valves V, V<SP>1</SP> open when the liquid descends in the chambers to prevent partial vacuum therein. The chambers may be raised and lowered by hydraulic rams Z, Z<SP>1</SP>, in which case telescopic connections Z<SP>2</SP> are provided between the chambers and the pipe B.
