Abstract
556,462. Printing surfaces. AULT & WIBORG, Ltd., and LOVELL, H. G. Feb. 3, 1942, No. 1444. [Class 100 (ii)] A curved printing plate of thermo-plastic material, e.g. of cellulose acetate and a filler, is made by forming a flat matrix in a thermo-setting material from the original block or plate, pressing under heat a sheet of the thermo-plastic material on to the matrix to obtain a flat printing plate, separating the plate from the matrix when cool, heating the plate again to render it plastic and pressing to the required curvature in a cold press. The formation of the matrix and the flat plate may be effected in a press comprising upper and lower plates provided with heating elements embedded in asbestos and encased in aluminium. One platen may be provided with a thermostat and the other with a thermometer, and the operations are performed at a temperature of about 300‹ F. The material for the matrix may be a sheet of paper or canvas impregnated with or embedded in a synthetic resin. Before being placed in the curved press, the flat printing plate is heated to about 200‹ F.
