Abstract

1496881 Moulding transparent panels HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 12 March 1975 [17 Jan 1974] 02292/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division E1 A shaped transparent sheet, e.g. an aircraft window is made from a blank prepared from stretched acrylic sheet by heating the blank to a temperature below its softening point, forming the sheet between dies 51, 52 heated to the softening point of the sheet under high pressure, e.g. 1¢ tons/in.<SP>2</SP>, and cooling the formed sheet to ambient temperature while clamped between the dies to prevent contraction of the stretched sheet. The blank is cut to shape, cleaned and given an anti-static treatment before being heated between platens 41, 42 (Fig. 4, not shown) with a surrounding spacer (44) forming an air space. The blank is transferred to the electrically heated dies 51, 52 and pressed in three stages of increasing pressure with pressure release in between to allow escape of trapped air through vents 53, 54. Cooling water is then passed through both dies. A frame 55 prevents excessive lateral spread of sheets of incorrect thickness.
