Abstract
556,043. Uniting by fusion. HOWELL, N. March 4, 1942, Nos. 2842 and 7460. [Class 83 (iv)] An oxy-gas metal-cutting machine has its torch traversed by energy previously stored in a device by manually displacing said torch, the speed of traverse being determined by the rate of release of the stored energy. The energy may be stored by lifting a weight 5 which is connected to a piston in a cylinder 3 by a hollow rod 6 and to a smaller weight 10 by a chain 4 passing around a wheel 8 on the rotary torch carrier 2. The bottom of the cylinder 3 is connected to a reservoir 11 through a non-return inlet valve 12 and through a valve 13 which car be adjusted to regulate the flow of fluid from the cylinder and nence the speed ot traverse of the torch. In a modification the piston is connected to a rack engaged by a pinion 16 on a shaft 17, Fig. 2, which carries a drum 19 and weight 20 at one end and at the other a pinion 21 engaging pinions 22, either of which can be secured to the carrier 2. The head 24 may be angularly adjustable about the axis of the shaft 17. In other modifications the torch is moved along a straight line. Provisional Specification 2842/42 describes the use of compressible gas to supply the necessary energy which has been stored in it by a previous movement of the torch or by a compressor and an arrangement in which a piston actuated rack bar operates a pinion and endless chain, to either flight of which a slide, carrying the torch, may be clamped.
