Abstract
555,420. Moving-figure toys. ABBEY, A. (Mechanical Man, Inc.). Feb. 17, 1942, No. 2120. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 17, 1942.] [Class 132 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] An automaton representing a sleepy human figure has a head 6 carried on a rod 36 supported in slots 42 in a yoke 15 mounted on uprights 11, 12 within the body 5 of the figure. A motor 19 through reduction gearing 20, cranks 22, 23 and pitmans 24, 25 imparts rocking motions to a shaft 27 and to a bell-crank 28. The shaft 27 is fixed to an arm 7 which partakes of its oscillation, and the bell-crank 28 imparts both a to-&-fro and a rocking motion to the lower end of the rod 36 through links 38, 37 and a crossarm 35. A rod 52 pivoted at 49 to the yoke 15 may be linked to a hinged lower jaw so that the mouth 70 is open when the head is upright, but closes when the head swings over toward a shoulder. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 11, the upper part of the rod 52, guilded by brackets 90, carries two plungers 76 which are attached, at points just over the eyes 79, to a rubber or like elastic integument 69 covering the front of the head 6 and bears on a sponge rubber ring 79<SP>1</SP> surrounding each eye 79. When the rod 52 is drawn down by the turning motion of the head, the eyelids close over the eyes. Rods 81 pivoted to the rod 52 at 80 extend to the ears 83 and force these out slightly when the head is turned. Links 87 pivoted to the rod 52 slide at their outer ends on a rod 85 and carry extensions 88<SP>1</SP> attached at 89 to the integument to impart a smile. Lamps located behind the eyes, in a candle carried by the arm 7, and behind a flash sign in the pedestal are simultaneously illuminated and extinguished by a mercury switch 66 carried by the rocking shaft 27. The arm 8 is attached to the body through a spring connection 64 so as to extend slightly if a weight is supported thereby. Springs 32, 33 ease the motions of the shaft 27 and bell-crank 28.
