Abstract
555,208. Typewriters. PAILLARD ET CIE SOC. ANON., E. Feb. 6, 1942, No. 1587. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1941. [Class 100 (iv)] A. large pinion, engaging a small pinion on the platen-shaft, actuates a bottom-margin alarm and scale, and a scale for use in setting the platen in the starting position corresponding to the length of the sheet. Means may also be provided for rotating the platen to bring the first typing- line on the sheet into the printing line. The mechanism shown dissected in the Figure comprises a large pinion 4 gearing with a small pinion 1 on the platen shaft 2 and provided with pins 5, 6 for actuating a bell-hammer 9, and a drum 16 which is mounted loosely on the platen-shaft and has graduations representing the bottom margin. A spring 27 normally holds the drum in contact with a stop 27a. To permit reverse rotation of the platen, the pins 5, co-operate with a dog 10 pivoted on the bell-hammer, and the pins 6 co-operate with a bell-crank 14 which abuts on a shoulder on the drum. A drum 25 having sheet-length graduations is driven at the same speed as the pinion 4 by pinions 21, 23, 24. A handcrank 30 is connected to a sector 29 carrying a pawl 36 which is normally held out of engagement with a ratchet-wheel 28 on the pinion 21 by a stop 39. A knock-off stop 40 for the pawl is adjustable with reference to a line-space scale 44 by means of a micrometer-screw 42. In operation, the platen is turned until the graduation on the drum 25 corresponding to the length of the sheet is aligned with a mark 26, the stop 40 is set in correspondence with the position of first typing-line, and the sheet is placed between the platen and feed-rollers. The crank 30 is then pulled forwards until the pawl 36 is knocked off, the first typing-line being thereby positioned in the printing line. When a predetermined number of lines have been typed, one of the pins 5 operates the bell-hammer, the diametricallyopposite pin 6 entrains the drum 16, and thereafter, the graduations can be read with reference to a mark 20 to indicate the remaining bottom-margin. The pins 5 and 6 may be arranged on different diameters of the pinion and may be on opposite sides thereof. More than two pairs of pins 5, 6 may be provided, in which case the drum 25 is driven by reduction-gearing, and repeat-graduations are provided on the drum.
