Abstract

554,721. De-lignification of wood &c. by chlorination. DREYFUS, H. Dec. 20, 1941, No. 16441.' [Class 2 (ii)] Wood in the form of sawdust or other ligno-cellulosic material is delignified by chlorination at a temperature not exceeding 40‹ C. in suspension in finely divided form in a liquid containing available chlorine in a concentration not exceeding 2 per cent. by weight of the liquid. The ligno-cellulosic material may be boiled prior to chlorination with dilute alkali solution, and the chlorinating agent may be sodium or other hypochlorite in conjunction with an acid. Chlorination may be in two stages, the chlorination products being removed at the end of each stage.
