Abstract
554,673. Lift safety devices. WADSWORTH & SONS, Ltd., W., and DISLEY, H. J. March 3, 1942, No. 2812. [Class 78 (iii)] A speed limiting device for lifts, of the type in which governor gear grips a safety rope k when the speed exceeds a predetermined maximum and causes clamps, &c. i upon the cage to engage the guide rails j and bring the car to rest, has means for increasing the braking pressure at any desired predetermined rate as the movement of the car continues. Pull by the governor on the rope k causes a shaft a to rotate and to impart axial movement to nuts h, d threaded one pair at each end on the shaft a, means e being provided for preventing rotation of the nuts. Slidable on the shaft a between each pair of nuts h, d is a cone f pressed by a spring g abutting the nut h so as to cause the cone to follow the nut d and splay out the near ends of the pivoted clamps i and cause their far ends to squeeze the guide rails. The pitch of the screw on which each nut h rides is greater than that carrying nut d, so that a predetermined increase of gripping pressure takes place as the pull on the rope k continues.
