Abstract

554,480. Valves. ASCOT GAS WATER HEATERS, Ltd., and FRIEDMAN, L. Feb. 6, 1942, No. 1580. [Class 135] A diaphragm-actuated valve has the diaphragm connected to the valve spindle by a ball and socket joint. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a pressure regulating valve. The diaphragm 5 clamped between the two parts 1, 2 of the casing is reinforced by a flat plate 7 and curved plate 6 clamped on each side of the diaphragm by a rivet 8 with a hemispherical head 9. A valve member 15 co-operating with a seat is formed on a spindle 14 provided with a hemispherical cun 16 held in contact with the head 9 by a spring 17. The valve is actuated by inlet or outlet pressure in the chamber 3 acting on the diaphragm against the action of a loading spring 10. In the form shown in Fig. 2 a two-part spherical member is clamped by a screw 22 to the centre of the diaphragm. The lower part 21 co-operates with a cup 16 on a valve spindle 14 of the water supply valve of a water heater as in the first form. The upper part 20 co-operates with the spindle 24 of the gas supply valve of the heater. In another form a solid sphere is formed with a diametral groove to receive the edge of a hole in the diaphragm. In another form the upper end of the stem of a hemispherical headed bolt is rounded to engage the rod 24. The socket may be formed in the member secured to the diaphragm and co-operate with a spherical head on the valve spindle. According to the Provisional Specification the invention may be applied to the actuation of electric switches.
