Abstract
554,226. Moulding abrasive articles. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. Dec. 9, 1942, No. 17539. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1941. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] An abrasive disc &c. bearing a coating of abrasive grains on a surface is made by compacting comminuted material such as powdered metal, depositing a layer of grains thereon, electrostatically charging an adjacent surface on another body to attract the grains thereto and then moving the body to compact further the comminuted material and embed therein the grains. The plunger 10 of a press is for this purpose fitted with a mould plate 11 of hard vulcanized rubber coated with an amalgam of tin and mercury. The mould plate fits a mould ring 20, which may be reinforced by metal rings 40 and is fitted with a conducting ring 21 connected to a lead 26. A bottom mould plate 18 of steel fits the mould ring and takes the previously compacted comminuted material 35 on which are spread the abrasive grains 36.
