Abstract
553,698. Grinding-wheels. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1942, No. 17611. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1941. [Class 60] Abrasive wheels with flat annular grinding faces are made by placing a layer of powdered, low melting point metal on the annular surface of a metal backing, melting the metal and showering granular abrasive thereon while producing an electrostatic field in the path of the shower ; the abrasive may be further secured by electroplating. Suitable apparatus comprises a glass walled chamber in which is mounted a worm-driven vertical glass shaft 27 on which is mounted a support 42 for the annular metal backing 10 which can be heated by a gas ring 51 carried by a shelf 35. The abrasive is supplied from a hopper 70, vibrated pneumatically and having a screen 72 through which a shower of the abrasive falls on to the annular face of the backing 10. A metal ring 83 having an aperture under the hopper overlies the backing and is connected, through the hopper, with a busbar 80 while a second busbar 81 is fitted with a metal brush 88 in contact with the side of the backing 10 ; by these means the abrasive on the backing is placed under electrostatic influence.
