Abstract
554,160. Boring heads or bars. AYERS, R. S., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 19, 1941, No. 16394. [Class 83 (iii)] Radially movable cutters of a boring head or bar are advanced to cutting position by a spring- loaded slidable member which is operated by contact with a stop member to cause retraction of the cutters and is locked in retracted position by a latch. Cutters 2, Fig. 1, are secured on holders 3 by set screws, the holders being grooved to engage a wedge section 11 of a member guided at 15, 16 and 17 in the cutter bar 1. A spring 18 urges the wedge to expand the cutters as limited by adjustable means such as screw rings 6 that engage shoulders 5 on the holders. The end 13 of the wedge contacts a stop on the machine, or work, or merely the blind end of the bore and compresses the spring 18 till the member is locked by a notch 24 and spring latch 22. The cutter holders are collapsed by spring rings 7. A knob enables the latch to be tripped manually for the resetting of the cutters. In a modification the wedge acts firstly to expand the cutters and then to retract them, thus enabling chamfering to be done. If the chamfer is to be formed at the end of the blind bore the cutters are cranked forwardly. The wedge may be of cam formation to enable a profiled bore to be produced. Instead of a wedge action the sliding member may be connected to the cutter holders by cranked levers. The latching and the cutter-adjusting means may be varied.
