United States Patent 3,2(l0,862 CUTTING TOOL Lawrence Heathington, 2742 W. Madison St., Phoenix, Ariz. Filed Jan. 21, 1963, Ser. No. 252,645 1 Claim. (Cl. 14427) This invention pertains to improvements in cutting tools and more particularly to a cutting tool and fixture for rabbeting and drilling doors and door jambs to receive hinges for hanging the doors.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a tool for rabbeting and drilling doors and door jambs for hinges such as shown in copending applications Serial No. 244,481, filed Dec. 13, 1962, and Serial No. 196,413, filed May 21, 1962.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tool and fixture adapted to rabbet and bore doors and door jambs with high accuracy and with a minimum of skill and effort being required of the user of the tool.
A further object is to provide a telescopic drill and counterbore tool and fixture for preparing doors and door jambs for the rapid and accurate mounting of hinges for door hanging.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a door hinge to be fitted to the door and door jamb by use of the tool and fixture of this invention.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view in the line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the fixture and tool incorporating the features of this invention.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3.
FIG. 5 is an end elevation of the apparatus shown in FIG. 3.
FIG. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary View showing the rabbeted portion formed by the tool in the door and door jamb.
FIG. 7 is a view similar to FIG. 6 showing the counterbore and drilled pilot hole formed with the rabbeted portion.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention there is shown a door jamb 10 and door 11, FIGS. 1 and 2, in which are formed the rabbeted portion 12, the merging semicircular counterbore 13, and the pilot hole 14, FIGS. 6 and 7 for receiving the hinge comprising the plates 16 which fit in the rabbeted portions 12 and counterbore portions 13 and the pilot plugs 17 which fit in the pilot holes 14. Suitable lock pins 18 pass through diametral holes in the plugs secure the hinges to the jambs and doors.
In order to prepare the rabbeted portion 12, the semicircular counterbore 13 and the pilot hole 14, FIGS. 6 and 7, in a highly accurate and efficient manner there is provided a unique cutting tool arrangement comprising a fixture 19 having a frame formed by the side rails 21) to the outer ends of which are fixed the end plates 21 by suitable screws 22 defining a first work engaging surface 23 adapted to engage the face 24 of the jamb 10 or the edge 25 of the door, FIG. 2, during the cutting operations thereon. A stop block 26 is rigidly fixed to the side rails 2d by suitable screws 27 and depends downwardly, FIGS. 4 and 5, below the work engaging surface 23 and has a second work engaging surface 28 at the right angles thereto adapted to engage the face 29 of the door 11 or the edge 30 of the jamb, FIG. 2, the work engaging surfaces 23 and 28 operating simultaneous to accurately position the fixture 19 laterally of the door and jamb edges.

A fixture rod 31 is slidably carried in suitable bores 32 in the side rails 20 which rod is similarly mounted in additional fixtures 19. Thumb clamping screws 33 threadedly mounted in the end member 21 and engaging the rod 31 serve to lock the mixture along the door and jamb edges for desired vertical spacing of the hinges.
Slidably mounted on suitable guideways 34 formed in the side rails 20 is the tool carriage block 35 in which is formed a bore 36 at each end of which is formed the identical counterbores 37 and 38. The outer race 39 of a ball bearing 4% closely slidingly fits in the counterbore 37 or 38 and is adapted to bottom therein against the radially disposed surfaces 41 of the counterbores 37 and 38. The inner race 42 of the ball bearing is rigidly fixed to the shank 43 of a hollow end milling cutter 45 having suitable cutting edges 44 defining a plane parallel to the work engaging surface 23 and located therebelow an amount equal to the depth desired for the rabbeted portion 12.
Slidably mounted for axial movement within the bore 46 of the end milling cutter 45, FIG. 4, is the shank 47 of the pilot hole drill 4-8 having suitable cutting edges 49. A drive screw 50 is fixed in the shank 43 of the end milling cutter 45 and projects inwardly into the bore 46 to slidingly engage the drive slot 51 formed in the shank 47 so that rotation of the shank 47 effects rotation of the end milling cutter 45 while allowing axial movement of the pilot hole drill 48. Normally, the pilot hole drill is yieldingly held in retracted position within the bore 46 of the end milling cutter 45 by the compression spring 52 which abuts against the outer end 53 of the end milling cutter shank 43 and against a thrust washer 54 confined axially on the shank 47 of the pilot hole drill 48 by a suitable cotter key 55 pasisng diametrically through the bore 56 formed in the shank 47. The retracted position of the pilot hole drill is limited by engagement of the inner end of the screw 51) in the bottom 57 of the slot 51 so as to position the cutting edges 43 above the work engaging surface 23 of the fixture 19. The outer end of the shank 47 has a reduced squared end portion 53 which is adapted to receive the drive socket 59 of a suitable power tool 60 for rotating the shank 47.
A lock pin locating device 61 is provided on the frame 19, FIG. 4, comprising a plunger 62 guided in the semicircular bearing surface 63 formed on the extension 64 of the stop block 26 and having a reduced inner end 65 slidably carried in a bore 66 formed in the stop block 26. A compression spring 67 is provided around the reduced end 65 which is adapted to engage the surface 68 of the stop block 26 to normally yieldingly withdraw the plunger 62. A stop pin 63 carried in the reduced end es engaging in the bottom of the counterbore 71? in the limits of the retracted position of the plunger 62 so that its pointed end 71 is normally retracted behind work engaging surface 28 of the stop block 26.
In operation: With the tool carriage block retracted to the right-on the frame 19, FIG. 4, with its abutment surface 72 in engagement with the surface 73 of the end plate 21, the frame 19 is positioned by its work engaging surfaces 23 and 28 on the door or jamb as described. The power tool 60 is then applied to the shank 47 and energized to revolve the cutter 45 and drill 48 at appropriate high speed. The tool carriage block 35 with the cutter and drill revolving is moved from the retracted position in to the drilling position 75 where the abutment surface 77 of the tool carriage block 35 engages the rod 31 causing the cutter 45 to form the rabbet 12, FIG. 6. When position 75 is reached, the power tool 74 is pushed axially downwardly, FIG. 4, compressing spring 52 causing the drill 43 to form the pilot hole 14, FIG. 7. The outer end 76 of the plunger 62 is struck with a hammer causing the pointed end 71 to make a locating hole 71a in the work for accurately positioning the lock pins 18 when the hinge is mounted on the door or jamb. Release of axial pressure on the shank 74 and plunger 62 releases the tool from the Work which is now ready for the application of the hinges as described.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration Without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall Within the scope of the appendant claim are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
A cutting tool for operating upon a workpiece comprising in combination:
(a) afrarne,
(b) a first Work engaging surface fixed on said frame,
(c) a second work engaging surface fixed on said frame located at right angles to and facing toward said first work engaging surface,
(d) a tool carriage slidably mounted on said frame for movement parallel to said first Work enegaging surface and movable relative to said second work engaging surface from a position behind said second work engaging surface to begin the cutting operation to a position in front of said second work engaging surface at theend of the cutting operation so as to hold said frame in operative position on the Workpiece,
(e) a rotary cutter journaled on said carriage for rotation about an axis at right angles to said first work engaging surface,
(1) a rotary drill coaxially mounted for axial movement within said rotary cutter,
(g) means on said drill for connecting a power tool for simultaneously rotating said cutter and drill,
(h) cutting edges on said cutter rotating in a plane parallel to said first work engaging surface and projecting outward thereof,
(i) cutting edges on said drill rotating in a plane parallel to said first Work engaging surface,
(j) yielding means interacting between said cutter and said drill to normally hold said drill with its cutting edges retracted below the plane of the cutting edges on said cutter,
(k) said means on said drill for applying said power tool thereto being adapted to the simultaneous rotat-' ing of said drill, moving said drill axially outwardly relative to said cutter, and sliding of said tool carriage on said frame (1) and means on said frame moving parallel to said first work engaging surface and said tool carriage travel having a pointed end normally yieldingly retracted below said second work engaging surface adapted when actuated from retracted position to form a locating hole on a workpiece.
