This invention relates to a novel construction of drill guide especially adapted for attachment to a door for centering the door relatively to the guide so that a drillbit engaging "the guidewill be correctlycentered relatively to the opposite sides of the door for drilling or boring a recess to receive a lock and to insure that the bored recess will be equally spaced from the two sides or the faces of the door and at a right angle to the door edge out of' which the recess opens so that a lock fitted therein will operate correctly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drill guide having adjustable stop means for limiting the depth of the drilled recess and by means of which recesses of any desired depth guide to doors of different standard thicknesses.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guide of the aforedescribed character of extremely simple construction capable of being economically manufactured and "sold, which will be durable for accomplishing its intended purpose, and which will save considerable time in accomplishing lock installations in doors and insure an accurate installation. The rod 33 is provided with an angularly disposed end 34 which projects from the portion thereof which extends from the end wall I6 to provide an adjustable stop, as will hereinafter become apparent. The block 9 is provided with a transverse threaded opening 35 the inner end of which opens transversely into the bore 32, near its open end, and the outer end of which opens outwardly of the adjacent side I2. A setscrew 36 having a turning handle 3'! at its outer end is threaded into the bore 35 and is adapted to be advanced into clamping engagement with the rod 33 to hold the rod against sliding and turning movement in the bore 32 when the setscrew 36 is in an advanced position.
The top and bottom edges of the extension bars I4 ar provided with longitudinally extending grooves 38 which extend from end-to-end thereof and which, open outwardly of the outer ends of said bars. The grooves 38 are disposed adjacent and parallel to the inner extension bar faces I5. A plurality. of sets of spacereducers are provided each of which includes a pair of spacer bars 39 of alength substantially equalto each extension bar I4. Each spacer bar 39 is provided adjacent each end thereof and at its top and bottom edges with a pair of hook members 40, each of which projects from the same side of the bar 39 and has a right angularly disposed terminal portion 4| extending toward the hook 48 disposed thereabove or therebeneath and which is disposed parallel to the bar 39. A pair of the bars 39 f the same thickness are .applied to the inner faces I5 of the extension bars I4 by slidably engaging the hook portions M in the grooves 38 to support the bars 39 against the faces I5 for reducing the unoccupied space between the bars I4 so that opposite sides of a door of a reduced thickness may be engaged snugly between a pair ofspac'er bars 39. It will be readily apparent that any desired number of pairs of bars 39 may be provided, the individual bars of which will differ from the bars of other sets only in respect to their thickness, to thereby variably adjust the unoccupied space between the extension bars I4.
Assuming that the drill guide 8 is to be employed with a door of a maximum conventional thickness, a portion of which is shown at 42 in Figures 2, 3 and 4, the extension bars I4 are disposed to straddle the door 42 so that their inner faces IE will abut the opposite sides or the faces of the door 42 and the block 9 is displaced inwardly with respect to the outer, free edge 43 of the door until its end wall I3 and the straight edge I 9 abut against the door edge 43. The screw 29 is turned to retract the head 30 and the yoke legs 23 and 24 are then swung upwardly until their terminals are in the same plane as the extension bars I4. The screw 29 is then turned to advance the head 30 inwardly. When the head 38 abuts the outer side of the adjacent bar I 4 further turning of the screw 29 inthe same direction will cause the portion 2| to slide through the opening 29 until the head 25 abuts the outer side of the other bar I4. The extension bars I4 are suinciently resilient so that further rotation of the screw 29 to advance the head 39 inwardly will cause th extension'bars I4 to be swung inwardly sufficiently to clamp their inner faces I5 against the opposite side of the door 42. It will be readily apparent that the same result will be accomplished when a pair of spacer bars 39 areapplied to the bars I4 for fit- 4 ting the drill guide 8 to a door 42a of reduced thickness, as illustrated in Figure 6. As the door 42 wil1 be snugly engaged between the extension bars I4 either with or without space reducers 39, if desired the yoke 22 may be disposed below the bars I4 as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2 and the screw 29 may then be operated in the same manner as previously described for clamping a portion of the door 42 between the heads 26 and 30 so that in this manner the drill guide 8 will likewise be rigidly secured to the door 42 with the block end I3 and the bar edge I9 abutting the free edge of the door 43 so that the 3 guide channel or groove II] will be disposed perpendicular to said edge 43. Accordingly, with the drill guide 8 thus applied to a portion of the door 42 a drill bit 44 may be positioned to rest in the guide channel I0 and will be supported thereby perpendicular to the door edge 43 and centered with respect to the opposite sides or the faces of the door 42. A brace 45 which is disposed beyond the outer end I6 of the block 9 and which is secured by a chuck 46 to the shank end 01' the bit 44 may then be operated in a conventional manner to advance the bit 44 into the door 42 to form a lock receiving recess 41 which will be centered with respect to the opposite sides or the faces of the door 42 and perpendicular to the door edge 43 provided that the bit 44 is held or allowed to rest in the bed of the guide channel It during the drillin operation. In order to make the recess 41 of a desired depth, before the drilling is commenced and with the inner end of the bit abuttingthe edge 43 the setscrew 36 is loosened and the rod-33 adjusted to position its end 34 against the bit shank and at a distance from the chuck 46 equal to the depth that is desired to drill the recess 47. Accordingly, when the chuck 46 is advanced into engagement with the abutment or stop 34, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the operator will know that a recess of the desired depth is drilled.
The drill guide 8 may be formed of any suitable material preferably a metal having sufiicient resiliency to permit the bar extensions I4 to yield toward one another sufliciently to clamp a portion of the door 42 therebetween. The drill guide 8 may be made in various sizes and is obviously capable of other uses in addition to its preferred use previously described.
Various other modifications and changes are likewise contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A drill guide comprising an elongated block, a pair of spaced parallel fur-cations extending longitudinally from one end of the block and adapted to straddle and snugly engage opposite the end of one of said legs, a screw threadedly engaging the end of the other of said legs, a second clamp headisupported on said screw, for movement toward and away from the first clamp head when the screw is revolved, and the surface of said block opposite said one face having a guide channel extending from end-to-end thereof in which a drill bit is adapted to rest for drilling a bore or recess in the workpiece, said guide channel being disposed with its axis at a right angle to the first mentioned end of the block and said edge of the bar and centered with respect to the spaced furcations.
2. A drill guide as in claim 1, and an adjustable stop slidably engaging in said block and havin a stop portion disposed beyond the opposite outer end of the block and adjustable toward and away from the adjacent end of said guide channel, means securing the stop in different adjusted positions, said stop portion being adapted to be disposed to be engaged by a brace chuck connected to the bit to adjustably limit the depth of penetration of the bit in the workpiece.
3. A drill guide as in claim 1, an adjustable stop slidably and rotatably engaging in said block and having a stop portion disposed beyond the opposite, outer end of the block and adjustable toward and away from the adjacent end of said guide channel, said stop portion being adapted to be disposed to be engaged by a brace chuck connected to the bit to adjustably limit the depth of penetration of the bit in the workpiece, said stop portion being swingable away from the axis of the guide channel to an inoperative position, and manually actuated clamping means for securing said adjustable stop in a plurality of adjusted positions relatively to the outer end of the block and with said stop portion in either an operative or an inoperative position.
4. A drill guide as in claim 1, the legs of said yoke being substantially parallel and disposed in the same plane, said first clamp head being formed integral with its associated legs and inwardly offset with respect to the axis thereof, said second clamp head being swivelly mounted on the inner end of said screw, said clamping heads being engageable with the remote sides of the spaced furcations for displacing said spaced furcations into gripping engagement with the opposite sides of the workpiece.
5. A drill guide as in claim 1, and a space reducing member detachably mounted on each of the spaced furcations and bearing against the inner face of the associated furcation for reducing the unoccupied space between the spaced furcations to adapt the drill guide to workpieces of different thicknesses.
6. A drill guide as in claim 1, and a space reducing member detachably mounted on each of the spaced furcations and bearing against the inner face of the associated furcation for reducing the unoccupied space between the spaced furcations to adapt the drill guide to workpieces of different thicknesses, each of said space reducing members including a bar bearing against the inner face of its associated spaced furcation and having hook portions at its top and bottom edges projecting from one side thereof, said spaced furcations having top and bottom edges provided with grooves extending longitudinally thereof and opening outwardly from the free ends of said spaced furcations and slidably receiving said hook portions for detachably mounting the spacin bars against the inner faces of said spaced fur cations.
