Abstract

1,254,535. Latch installation tool. EMHART CORP. 19 Nov., 1968 [20 Nov., 1967], No. 54761/68. Heading B5L. [Also in Division B3] A latch installation tool comprises a frame including a pair of clamp plates 20, Fig. 1, having opposing laterally spaced clamp faces for engaging laterally opposite faces of a door 12 positioned between the clamp plates and means supporting the plates for lateral movement toward and away from each other, guide means for enabling the frame to be initially aligned with a predetermined longitudinally extending line of reference on the outer edge of the door, clamping means 22 for moving the plates 20, the means 22 and each of the plates having co-engaging cam surfaces, at least one of the cam surfaces associated with each of the plates being so inclined that the plates move towards each other and into clamping engagement with the door faces in response to movement of the clamping means, and a cutter assembly supported on the frame for operably engaging the door to form an opening therein for receiving a part of a latch. The cutter assembly may be a mortice cutter assembly 26 including a support member 120 mounting a bit 114 for axial and rotational movement. The bit 114 is adapted for connection to a power tool. The support 120 has ribs located between adjacent pairs of teeth 76 on the plates 20. The cutter assembly 26 is attached to or released from the teeth 76 by rotation of a lever 125. The assembly 26 is used to make a hole or a series of overlapping holes in the edge of the door by engaging it with a selected pair or selected pairs of teeth 76. After drilling said hole or holes the cutter assembly 26 is replaced by a router assembly 29, Fig. 4, which is releasably attached to the supports for the members 22 by spring-loaded plungers mounted on end stops 148 of the assembly 29. The assembly 29 includes a cutter bit 147 mounted for lateral and axial movement on a U-shaped guide block 164, which is itself mounted for longitudinal sliding movement along rods 150. The router assembly forms a recess for the faceplate of the latch. The clamp plates 20 are provided with apertured bosses 82, 84 to which boring cutter assemblies including drill bits may be attached for forming bores through the door.
