DE WII'T C. GOODRICH, OF NATIONAL MILITARY HOME, KANSAS.
BRACE-BIT BORING-TOOL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DE WVITT C. Goonnlon, a citizen of the United States, residing at National Military Home, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brace-Bit Boring-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a directing implement for boring bits.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a simple and effective device whereby bits or angers may be directed at any desired angle. I also propose to provide an apparatus of this character which is extremely simple in construction, comprising few parts, which is accurate and which may be constructed at a minimum cost.
With the above objects in view, the in vention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of the device. Fig. 5 is a sectional view upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view upon the line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a sectional view upon the line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the device illustrated in Fig. 4:.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the numeral 1 designates the base member, which is preferably of a rectangular formation and which may be constructed of any desired material. The base 1, adjacent its transverse edges is preferably formed with ribs 2, the same extending the entire width of the base.
The numeral 3 designates a plate which is adapted to rest upon the base 1. This plate adjacent its transverse edges is provided with depressed portions or channels 4, the latter adapted to be received upon the ribs 2. The plate 3 is also preferably of a rectangular formation, and as illustrated in Fig. 1, the said plate 3 is formed with oppositely arranged pairs of elongated slots or openings 5, the same being positioned directly above the channels 4.
The numeral 6 designates headed screw Specification of Letters Patent.

members which pass through the slots 5 and which engage within threaded openings provided in the base 1, and whereby the plate may be secured in an adjustable position upon the base 1.
The numeral 7 designates a semi-circular member, the same having its upper face provided with graduation marks as designated by the numeral 8. This semi-circular member or segment is provided with a slot or opening 9, which is concentric with the outer or curved edge of the said member 7, and passing tln'ough this curved slot 9 is a headed threaded member 10. This member 10 is adapted to engage within a threaded recess provided upon a substantially V-shaped guide member 11, said guide member being pivoted to the segment 7 as at 12. The plate 3 as well as the base 1 are each provided with a centrally arranged elongated opening through which the bit or anger is adapted to project when engaging the material to be operated upon. 111 this connection it may be stated here that the anger or bit is placed within the guide 11 after the said guide has been adjusted upon the segmental member 7, and it will of course, be understood that the said guide will direct the bit to a desired angle at which the said bit is to be operated.
The central portion or what maybe termed the apex of the Vshaped guide 111. is provided with a graduation or mark 1 1, the latter adapted to register with any of the graduations 8 upon the said n'iember 7, so that the desired angle may be readily attained. In the said figures of the drawings the segmental member 7 is provided adjacent the lower edges with rearwardly extending flattened arms 15, the same being each formed with a longitiulinally extendin slot 16, and the plate 3 is provided witi graduation marks 17, which are arranged znljarent the outer longitudinal edges of the said arms 15. The outer edges of the arms 15 are likewise provided with graduations 18.
The numerals 1S) designate headed threaded members, the threaded portions of which passing through the slots 16 and engaging within threaded openings provided in the plate 3. The shoulders or heads of the said members 19 are adapted to contact with the plates 15 adjacent the slotted openings thereof, to compressthe same upon the plate 3, and thus permit of the adjustment of the segmental member 7 with relation to the said plate 3.
In Figs. 4: and 5 the device is substantially similar to that heretofore set forth except that in these figures the segmental member 7 is formed with a rectangular rearwardly extending plate or base 20, the same being provided adjacent its end edges with elongated slots corresponding with the slots 16 in the arms 15. The outer edges of the member 20 are preferably beveled as at 22 and are provided with graduation marks 23 which correspond with similar marks 24 provided upon the plate 3 the plate inthis instance is also centrally formed with an elongated opening for the passage of the bit.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a base having transversely arranged ribs, a plate having its under face recessed to engage with the ribs, means for adjustably sustaining the plate upon the ribs of the base, the said plate being centrally provided with an elongated opening, a segmental member arranged upon the plate, said member being rovided with rearwardly extending graduated portions, means for adjustably sustaining the segmental member upon the plate, a pivoted guide member upon the segmental member, and means for retaining the said guide member at an angular adjustment upon the Segmental member.
2. In a device of the class described, a base, said base having a central opening, a plate adjustably secured upon the base, said plate having a central opening which registers with the opening in the base, a segmental member adjustably connected With the plate and arranged at a right angle thereto and transverse the openings of the plate and base, a guide member concentrically pivoted to the segmental member, and
means co-acting with the guide and segmental member for sustaining the guide when swung upon its pivot upon the segmental member.
3. In a device for the purpose set forth a substantially rectangular base, a longitu inally adjustable plate upon the base, the said plate being centrally provided with an opening, a segmental member for the plate, said member having angularly arranged rearwardly extending portions which rest upon the plate, the said portions being provided with elongated slots, headed threaded members passing through the slots, the segmental member having a concentrically arranged opening disposed adjacent its periphery, a guide member pivotally connected to the segmental member at the axial center of the said member and disposed directly above the slot of the opening of the plate, and a headed threaded member passing through the concentric slot of the segmental member and engaging with the guide member to retain the sald guide ata desired angle with relation to the segmental member and to the base. 7
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
