554,142. Disc brakes. ROSS. J. A., and KITCHIN W. C. Dec. 22, 1941, No. 16514. [Class 103 (i)] A disc brake particularly for vehicle wheels comprises a rotatable disc arranged to be gripped between a pair of non-rotatable discs each of which is movable towards and away from the rotatable disc. The brake may be applied by springs and be released by cams or be applied by cams and released by springs or be both applied and released by screw-and-nut mechanism. As shown, a rotatable annular disc 2 is bolted to projections 4 on a plate 5 secured to a wheel hub 3. Non-rotatable discs 6, 7 are slidably mounted upon a sleeve 10 rotatable on a sleeve 11 integral with a fixed plate 12. The discs 6, 7 are urged to grip the disc 2 by springs 16 on pins 13 attached to the plate 12 and a plate 14 and extending through the discs and are disengaged by the engagement with rollers 18 thereon, of a two-faced cam 17 carried by the sleeve 10 which is provided with teeth 19 meshed with a gear wheel 20 carrying an operating arm. Application of the brake by the springs may be assisted by' levers pivoted on the pins 13 or the plates 12, 14 and engaging the discs 6, 7 and additional cams or cam faces on the member 17. In another construction, the discs 6, 7 have right-and-lefthanded screw-threaded apertures engaged by screwthreaded sleeves mounted on the pins 13 and provided with gear wheels meshed with a central gear wheel mounted on the sleeve 11, this gear wheel being meshed with a further gear wheel arranged similarly to the gear wheel 20. According to the Provisional Specification, the discs may be released by springs and be applied by a cam member.
