554,063. Pickets. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd., and McMINN, E. May 16, 1942, No. 6660. [Class 45] A picket comprises a central tube 1 provided with a pointed end 2 to which is welded a web fixture 3. On this fixture are mounted three or four curved tubes 5 through each of which passes a tubular or other stake 6 which are all welded to a ring plate 8 and a head plate 7, both of these plates being slidable on the tube 1. In use the picket is driven into the ground either by direct blows on the head 4 or by striking a tube 10 having an inside abutment a short way up from one end. The plate 7 is then forced down by an open tube placed over the head 4, as shown at 12, the stakes 6 thus being pressed out laterally through the guide tubes 5. Retraction of the stakes 6 may be effected by providing them with upward extensions which reach ground level when the stakes are in gripping position, holes in the exposed ends of these extensions enabling them to be pulled up and so retract the stakes prior to withdrawal of the picket as a whole. Alternatively a threaded tube or rod may extend upward from the point 2 to which it is welded, and the remainder of the tube 1, detached from the point 2, be internally threaded to take over such rod. Rotation of the tube 1 will cause it to rise and, by a shoulder on its bottom coming up against the ring plate 8, effect the withdrawal of the stakes 6.
