The central tube 140 and driven tube 131 are threadably interconnected by means of an extension member 145 which slidably engages a coupling member 156 and has an abutment shoulder 153. A hollow drill string 158 may be provided to remove the earth within the driven tube 131, and drilling fluid pumped down through the drill string discharges through a branch 150 of the extension member 145.
