Abstract
553,736. Moulding catalytic gels. HOUDRY PROCESS CORPORATION. Aug. 1, 1941, No. 9823. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1940. [Classes 1 (i), 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] [Also in Group V] A continuous process for producing synthetic inorganic gels in granular form for use as catalysts consists in combining continuous streams of reacting solutions with agitation in a confined chamber, ejecting the mixture from the chamber as a substantially completely formed gel, drying the gel and forming into granules. As shown in Fig. 2, the solutions admitted at 11a, 11b may undergo primary mixing by an agitator 11c and then be injected tangentially into a chamber 10a into which a precipitating solution is admitted by circumferential ports 12a. The mixture is further agitated by the device 10b before leaving, this chamber. The gel is discharged on to a conveyer whereon it is drained and dried and after being broken up it is washed and if desired impregnated with suitable solutions of catalytic agents &c. After further drying and grinding the gel is moistened and subjected to mechanical' treatment to produce a paste, which is flowed into moulds and hardened therein. The moulds may be tapered holes in an endless belt 33a, Fig. 4, on to which the gel is spread in the form of a sheet by the action of mixing blades 101,. roller 102 and plate 113. A doctor blade 105 forces the sheet into the moulds and a second blade 105a removes surplus material from the lower surface of the belt and forces the contentsof the moulds upwards so as to protrude slightly from the upper surface, thus enabling the pellets, after drying, to be expelled from the moulds by the application of pressure to the protruding ends. The belt 33a circulates successively through a drying oven, under flexibleheating members which discharge the moulds, and through a washing device. Specifications 519,808 and 546,822 are referred to.
