Abstract

553,675. Substituted adipic acids. WILSON, C. L., WILSON, K. B., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 28, 1941, No. 15333. [Class 41] 2:3-Diarylapic acids or their esters are prepared by subjecting cinnamic acid or a nuclear substituted cinnamic acid or their esters to electrolytic reduction at a mercury cathode in a medium containing a mineral acid. The anode, which may be lead &c. is enclosed in a porous pot, the anolyte being a solution, for instance, of hydrochlorine, sulphuric or phosphoric acid. The catholyte, which is agitated, consists of the cinnamic acid or ester in solution in an organic solvent mixible with water, such as methyl or ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, acetone, or glacial acetic acid, together with diluted mineral acid as used for the anolyte. A current density of .03 to .07 amperes per square cm. of cathode surface is employed. Examples describing the preparation of diphenyl, di-ocyanophenyl, dichloro-diphenyl, and dimethoxydiphenyl-adipic acids are given.
