Abstract
553,638. Arc-rupturing in switches. BROOKHIRST SWITCHGEAR, Ltd., and HARRIS, R. C. Nov. 27, 1941, No. 15273. [Class 38 (v)] The movable arcing contact 20 of an air or oil-break switch is mounted on a bellcrank lever 16 which is pivoted at 23 to the main movable blade contact 14 and carries a weight 22 or is formed as a damping air vane or paddle. Owing to inertia effects in opening and closing, the lever 16 is caused to lag behind the blade 14, so causing the tip 20 to travel in a loop 24 whereby it acts as a spark-taking, contact in opening circuit, but in closing circuit engages the fixed arcing contact 15 after the main contacts engage, and at a different point on the contact 15 from that whereat it separated. The pivot position is also such that the contactpressure between 20, 15 is reinforced electrodynamically by the current loop comprising arm 19 and the blade extension. The switch may be snap-operated and can function even if tilted backwards or forwards by 45 degrees. In Fig. 1, centrifugal force tends to assist inertia-effects in closing, but in Fig. 4 the arrangement is such that centrifugal force acts in both directions as shown by the arrows 25 and radial line 26. The Specification refers also to the weight being shaped as a wind vane and paddle in air-break and oil-break switches, respectively.
