Abstract

798,033. Automatic circuit breakers. WHIPP & BOURNE, Ltd., and WHIPP, F. E. April 27, 1956 [April 29, 1955], No. 12391/55. Class 38 (5). The circuit-breaker comprises a detent lever 11, pivoted at 12 and having a moving contact carrying lever 15 pivoted to it at 16 and carrying a a bridging contact 26. An operating lever 19, pivoted at 20, is connected to the contact lever 15 by a tension spring 21. A bimetal strip 18 normally retains detent 11 in the position shown in Fig. 1 and movement of the operating lever 19 between positions 24 and 24a moves the line of action of the spring 21 to either side of pivot 16 so as to open and close the contacts. Under fault conditions strip 18 moves to the left and releases detent 11 so that it rotates in a clockwise direction under the action of spring 21 and when the stop end 30 engages pin 12, contact and detent move to the positions shown in Fig. 2. The spring also moves the operating lever 19 to position 24b so that its projection 33 engages detent 11, and will reset the detent when it is moved by hand to position 24a. A pin 35 can be manually moved to deflect the strip 18 for testing purposes, or in a multi-pole breaker it can be engaged by part 36 of the detent lever 11 to trip adjacent poles. The casing 13 is cut away at 39 to permit the projection of a plug-pin contact member 40.
