Abstract
1461217 Automatic circuit breakers MERLIN GERIN 26 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974 9 Dec 1974] 8127/75 Heading H1N In a circuit breaker of the type comprising in a moulded insulating casing co-operating fixed 10 and movable 12 contacts, an operating mechanism including a toggle 22, 24 for moving said movable contact, and a manually operable handle 18 movable between OFF and ON positions, wherein a blocking member 62 is positioned in the path of movement of the handle to prevent it moving to the OFF position when the contacts are closed, the blocking member is arranged to allow limited handle movement from the ON position towards the OFF position insufficient to collapse the toggle 22, 24 but sufficient to allow the mechanism to be tripped to open the contacts, the blocking member being moved out of the path of movement of the handle when the contacts open. This arrangement prevents movement of the handle to the OFF position if the contacts are welded together. The trip device operated by the handle comprises an arm 76 biased to engage a crank 82 which retains it when the handle is in the ON position but which is displaced to release it when the handle moves. Tripping of the circuit breaker under overload conditions is performed by a further tripping mechanism wherein rotation of a trip bar 56 releases a latch 48 and thus a cradle 28 which is rotated by a spring 32 to collapse toggle 22, 24 and open the contacts 10, 12. In further embodiments the blocking member takes the form of an arm engaging a trip lever connecting the handle and a trip device, Fig. 12, not shown, or a pin engaging a finger secured to handle 18, Fig. 13, not shown, or an extension of the toggle linkage, Fig. 14, not shown.
