Abstract

553,319. Degreasing apparatus. FRASER & FRASER, Ltd., and HELLER, M. Nov. 18, 1941, No. 14836. [Class 91] The surface layer of the liquid of degreasing vessels used for cleaning non-porous articles containing any watery emulsifier floating on the degreasing liquid is removed to prevent spotting of the cleansed articles when they are subsequently removed from the vessels by the provision of a weir outflow or overflow from the degreasing vessel together with an adjustable closure or flap for the weir. Positive impelling means may be used to move the surface layer towards the weir. In a degreasing vessel 1 supplied with degreasing liquid by a pump 3 and in which the articles to be cleaned are contained in a rotatable perforated drum 4 arranged therein, a slot 7 is provided in an end wall above the level of the top of the drum to form a weir overflow together with a hinged closure flap 15, a collecting vessel 8 being also provided having a discnarge pipe 9 communicating with the still of the plant. After completion of the degreasing operation with degreasing liquid only in the lower part of the vessel, rotation of the drum is discontinued, the flap closed and further liquid is supplied by the pump, to raise the liquid level to the line 17 when the pump is stopped and the flap opened to allow the surface layer with the impurities thereon to overflow the weir. One form of impelling means which may additionally be used comprises a horizontally disposed endless chain having a number of paddles or sweeps driven from one of its chain wheels, the paddles in the lower run of the chain dipping into the surface layer of the liquid. Alternatively the weir may be provided with a vertically sliding closure flap.
