Abstract
660,590. Extracting sugar. A.P.V. CO., Ltd., GREGORY, S. A., BICKLE, R. S., and TINSEY, G. S. Aug. 22, 1949 [Sept. 1, 1948], No. 23033/48. Classes 81 (i) and 127. Sugar is extracted from dates by feeding them through a hopper 15 into the lower end of an inclined elongated container 11 up which they are moved by a moving mechanical conveyer 13 and down which water, heated by injected steam to 90-97‹ C. to soften the dates, is continuously fed and the sugar liquor is removed from the lower end of the container. In the container below the hopper a baffle wall 17 is provided beneath which the liquor in the container rises and overflows over the wall of the container which forms a weir 18, Fig. 4, over which the liquor flows into a wort container 19 with outlet 20 and which controls the level of the liquor in the container. This liquor level is maintained helow the upper end of the conveyer so that the dates are lifted out and can be washed by hot or cold water spray 35. The liquid from outlet 20 is fed to a stone removal machine and then to a reservoir from which it passes to filter presses and thence to fermentation vessel. From the upper end of the machine the removed dates are fed to stone removal machines and the pulp from the latter is fed to filter presses. The liquor from the latter may be returned to the extracting container at the point 59 above the liquor level and/or through inlet 60 below the liquor level. Specification 660,573 is referred to.
