Abstract
1,168,035. Washing apparatus. SCOTTS ELECTRICAL WHOLESALERS Ltd. 5 June, 1968, No. 26721/68. Heading B8T. [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for washing and decontaminating surgical rubber articles comprises a cabinet 10 in which is mounted a bowl 11 having a motor 14 on its bottom, driving an impeller 12 and a pump 16 with an outlet 17 connected to a conduit 18 having outlet pipes 19, 21, 22 and 23. A hot water tank 25 fitted with an immersion heater 26 is mounted below bowl 11 and has a valve controlled inlet 27 and an outlet 25a connected to the bowl. A drain outlet 30 in the bowl is controlled by a solenoid 34 through arm 32. A micro switch and float arrangement keep the water level in bowl 11 constant. A detachable frame, on which items to be cleaned can be placed, can be lowered into the bowl. In operation, the various rubber items to be cleaned are placed on the vertical pipe or on frame. The lid 39 is then closed, a micro switch 41 actuating an automatic sequence of cleaning operations. First, hot water from tank 25 is forced into the bowl when valve 28 opens, the water being recirculated for 2 minutes by motor 14. The drain 30 is opened to empty the bowl; this is followed by a half minute drain period. The disinfecting cycle then begins, the water temperature in the bowl being raised to 190‹ F. by a heater 35. This cycle lasts 10 minutes. The process should ensure decontamination of the articles without damage to the rubber material of which they are made.
