Abstract

[Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] To facilitate the starting of compression-ignition or other internal-combustion engines, an electric heater a is provided in the air intake comprising a helical coil of wire a supported in a pipe b by radial wire hoops e fitted with insulating-bends f, the pipe b being connected at d to the intake, and at the other end to the air filter. In engines having hightension or other artificial ignition, a rotary valve may be provided on the intake pipe, whereby the induction manifold may be connected to a branch pipe fitted with the heater for starting, or to an opposed branch leading to a carburetter for normal running. Air from the heater branch may also be supplied to the carburetter. The pipe for supplying the heated air may pass through a radiator in the sump so as to heat the lubricating-oil, and the heater may be controlled both by a manual switch, and by a thermostatic switch which opens the circuit when the engine has warmed up.
