Abstract
552,682. Shredding cellulosic materials. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd., HEAVEN, G. S., and BUTLER, E. Oct. 15, 1941, No. 13288. [Class 59] [Also in Group IV] A process for shredding water sensitive non- fibrous cellulosic material consists in saturating such material with water to reduce its strength and thereafter tearing, grinding or cutting by mechanical means the saturated material to reduce it to the desired size. The material may be regenerated cellulose in the form of sheets, films, tubes, filaments or yarns produced from viscose or from cuprammonium cellulose solution, lowly substituted cellulose ester, lowly substituted cellulose ether or lowly substituted cellulose ether ester in the form of sheets, films tubes, filaments or yarns produced by casting or spinning from an aqueous cellulosic solution or dispersion. The shredding of the material may be effected by apparatus as shown in Fig. 1 comprising a vessel having a jacket 10, 11 through which cooling liquid may be circulated and rotary helical blades mounted on arms 19, 21 secured to trunnions 15, 17. The edges of the helical blades are serrated and co-operate with pyramidal teeth on the raised portion 13 of the bottom of the vessel. Specifications 283,109, [Class 2 (ii)], and 552,681, [Group IV], are referred to.
