Abstract

551,883. Pantothenic acid and its derivatives. MERCK & CO., Inc. Feb. 17, 1941, No. 2104. Convention date, April 8, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Pantothenic acid or a hydroxy derivative thereof is made by heating together a lactone of the structure with #-alanine or a salt thereof at a temperature high enough to melt the lactone. The dry reagents may be heated together alone, or an inert solvent (dioxane) may be present. Alcoholic solvents should not be used. The lactone employed may be racemic or either of the optical antipodes. Specification 535,988 is referred to.
