Abstract

551,443. Protective discharge arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., WALKER, A. H. B., and WATSON, T. F. E. Aug. 19, 1941, No. 10516. [Class 38 (iv)] In the protection of electrical apparatus, e.g. a condenser, against high-voltage surges and lightning discharges, there is connected across the apparatus one or more dry contact rectifier devices of the selenium or " front wall " type so connected as to be traversed by the current surge in reverse direction to that in which the rectifier is normally conductive. As applied to A.C. circuits, rectifier elements of the type referred to are arranged in two sets P, N on a supporting bolt 1, one set of rectifiers being placed for conduction in one direction and the other for conduction in the other direction..The device is connected to the.protected apparatus by the lugs 7 and a central lug 9 may be earthed. The, rectifiers may be so arranged that the direction of conduction alternates through the series.
