Abstract

550,966. Electric clocks. GRASEBY, R. C. Oct. 9, 1941, No. 13051. [Class 139] The balance wheel 1, Fig. 1, of a clock mechanism is electrically maintained by an armature 2 and the pole pieces 3 of an electromagnet the circuit of which is controlled by a contact 4 on the balance wheel and a spring contact 5. The balance wheel staff 9 has fixed thereto a sleeve 8 with end discs 10, 11. Pivoted to the disc 10 is a wire 13 of spring material the other end of which passes through a slot 12 in the disc 11. The slot may be arranged within the rim of the disc 11 or a ring 14 may lie in a groove in the disc to close the slot. The wire 13 serves as a driving connection between the balance wheel 1 and a ratchet toothed wheel 15, Figs. 1 and 3. In one direction of oscillation the wire 13 rides up the long face of a tooth and in the other direction engages the steep face to drive the wheel 15 step by step. The swing of the balance wheel and the size of the teeth on the wheel 15 may be arranged so that during the active movement two teeth are advanced each complete oscillation to and fro. A pivoted mask plate 20 may be provided, the plate being shaped and arranged so that the wire 13 drives at half the speed.
