Abstract
550,786. Regenerated cellulose filaments, films &c. TRANSPARENT PAPER, Ltd., and PELLATT, D. L. Sept. 24, 1941, No. 12382. [Class 2 (ii)] Formates, especially alkali metal formates, are used instead of glycerine for plasticizing regenerated cellulose in the form of foils, films, filaments, tubes &c. The formed structure before drying is passed through a plasticizing bath containing a substantial proportion of the salt of formic acid, e.g. the potassium or sodium salt, but not containing any substantial proportion of strong mineral acid. The bath may include glycerine or other glycerine substitutes such as glucose, sugar derivatives, urea, or alkali metal lactates. The final dried product is preferably arranged to contain 5-25 per cent. plasticizer. When used with urea as plasticizer sodium formate tends to prevent the urea from crystallizing out. Sodium formate also accelerates the rate atwhich a reel. of film can absorb moisture to acquire the correct flexibility when being unwound., Sodium formate may also be used with glycerine.
