[Class 96] The surface of paper j, Fig. 6, e.g. coated or sized paper, is smoothed or finished by a heated, trailing, blade m, Figs. 6 and 7, of a metal, e.g. steel . which will not blacken the paper, and having a rounded working surface which presses the paper j against a resilient covering e of natural or artificial rubber &c. of a roller d which may be cooled as by internal watersprays. The blade m may be laminated, or slotted, to increase, or reduce its stiffness; it may be lagged with asbestos cloth, and heated to 350-500‹F. by a thermostatically-controlled electric resistance; it may be counter-weighted or spring-loaded and may be set at an adjustable angle. More than one blade may be used in succession and the roller d may be substituted by an endless belt &c.
