[Class 83 (iii)] A vertical-spindle milling &c. machine has the work-table slidably mounted on the upper element of an adjustable turn-table, the lower element of which slides on the machine frame. The frame has a vertical split socket portion 21 which carries a vertically adjustable column 22 which is held against rotation by a key 54 and is locked after adjustment by clamping screws. Adjustment is effected from a hand-wheel 60 connected by worm gearing 59 and pinion 56 to a rack. The top of the frame is formed with a dovetail guide-way 24 for a slide 28 which is adjusted perpendicularly to the column by a screw 26 having a micrometer setting device 32. The slide 28 has a circular recess 33 receiving the spigot 36, Fig. 8, of a turn-table 35 which is adjusted by angular scales, and clamped by bolts 38. The turn-table has a guide-way 39 for receiving a work-holding slide 45 which may be adjusted by a screw having micrometer setting devices. The column is surmounted by an overarm 62 traversed by a shaft 64 driven by belt gearing from a variable speed motor 72 carried by a bracket 73. A swivel head casting is located on a spigot 78 and adjustably clamped by bolts 81 entering a groove 80. The front of the swivel head has a channel-section groove 82, and a lug 83 protruding from said groove carries a bevel pinion 85 driven by a gear 86 on the driving shaft .64. The spindle head 87 slides in the groove 82 and carries, on roller bearings 89, 90, a spindle 88 which is splined at 94 to co-operate with the gear 85. A rack on the spindle head is engaged by a pinion operated through worm gearing from a hand-controlled shaft provided with a micrometer scale to impart axial spindle feed. Adjustable stops 105 limit the feed of slide 28 and similar stops 109 limit feed of the top slide 45. Similar stops determine the movement of the spindle head. The swivel head may be adjusted so that the machine may be used for horizontal milling. The machine may be modified for jig boring, the column being replaced by a column of triangular section.
