Abstract

549,880. Forging and extruding machines. LOWY, L., (known as LOEWY, L.). May 9, 1941, No. 6019. [Class 83 (iv)] In extruding rods or tubes the die-end of the billet container 12 is temporarily closed so that the billet can be consolidated before extrusion. Closure may be effected by lowering a block 26, Fig. 4, between the separated die 16 and container 12 and then clamping these together again, by moving a slide 130, Fig. 6, carrying a die 16 and block 26 horizontally between them, or by inserting a block 38, Fig. 9, in the die opening and locking it by means of pins 45 engaging a bayonet slot 135. In this modification no separation of the die 16 and container 12 is necessary and it may be applied to existing machines. Billet-piercing.-When a tube is being made the billet is pierced by the mandrel 25, Fig. 4, after being compressed by mandrel and sleeve 24, if desired, while the closure block is still in position thus reducing the amount of scrap.
