549,271. Grinding. REYNOLDS, W. Aug. 22, 1941, No. 10762. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] In a fixture for setting-up tools in a lathe or like, a test rod 11 of say 1 inch diameter mounted between the centres is fitted with a level block 12 having a tool-setting face 19 and. a V-shaped recess 13 engaging the test piece, the block being retained by a spring 14. A spirit level is fitted at 15, and to set for instance a screwing tool, the latter is placed against the face 19 and the device rotated until the bubble is central when the tool surface will be in a horizontal plane through the axis of the test-piece. Another face 21 on the block may be in a vertical plane through the axis when the bubble is central and may be used for setting-up a grinding-wheel or milling cutter, while a third surface 23 may lie in a plane inclined at 45 degrees to the horizontal and passing through the test rod axis. The setting faces may be hardened or formed on hardened inserts. Or the setting may be made against a detachable plug 19a, different plugs being usable with test rods of different diameters. The upper part of the block carrying the surfaces 21 and 23 may be detachably mounted on the lower part.
