Abstract

548,782. Bearings. MUNTZ & CO., Ltd., A., and SCHREIBER, E. O. Aug. 16, 1941. No. 10440. [Class 12 (i)] In a cylindrical bearing for axial or rotary movement the bearing fit is adjusted by a wedge arrangement extending substantially for the full length of the support 10 and exerting a thrust tangential to the cylindrical member. A parallel key 21, Fig. 2, is secured to one member and a taper key 23 is secured at right angles to key 21, key 23 being engaged by a wedge 25. The wedge is retained in adjusted position by screws 26 threaded into the key 23, the screws engaging the wedge directly or through plates adjusted by set screws. The keys 21, 23 may be secured to the moving column 11 or to the fixed support 10. Key 23 may be replaced by two tapered elements with the wedge 25 between them, one of the elements being secured either to the support 10 or the column 11. Alternatively, the support 10c, Fig. 8, is split and carries a flange 34 on one edge, the wedge 25c acting between the flange and the other edge of the support.
