548,601. Friction clutches and brakes. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Sept. 12, 1941. No. 11729. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A combined motor, brake and clutch unit, particularly for sewing machines, comprises a driven member 26 rotatably and slidably mounted on the motor shaft 19 and adapted to engage with a friction ring secured to a flywheel 21 fixed to the motor shaft, or with a friction ring adjustably fixed to the motor casing 14. The friction rings consist of a metal ring 35 having friction material 36, e.g. cork cemented thereto. The operative face of the friction rings have radial grooves 37 the co-acting faces of the member 26 being flat. Openings 39 in the member 26 circulate air centrifugally through the grooves 37 for cooling purposes. The member 26 has a pulley 29 and is moved axially to cause engagement of the clutch or brake upon rotation of a sleeve 32 screwed to the motor casing and connected to a rod 31 fixed to the member 26. A shoulder 40 on the member 26 is adapted to engage the outer race ring of a bearing 23 after a predetermined amount of wear has taken place to prevent contact between the driven member 26 and the metal ring 35.
